The book includes a time line; a five-page overview; around 50 topical entries of people, concepts, and key events; and primary source documents, such as an excerpt from a Lowell Mill girl's diary and Adam Smith's thoughts on the division of labor. Articles are tightly written and to the point, each followed by cross-references and further reading. The concluding section asks three "Key Questions" and provides responses with differing points of view.
