Additionally, it provides a detailed history of the role of marijuana in society, an even-handed presentation of the arguments for and against its legalization or decriminalization.

Editorial Reviews

Review by Library Journal.
These recently updated handbooks respectively cover the current legal status of marijuana use and changes in the public perception of the drug and the legal issues pertaining to same-sex marriages. Newton (Youth Substance Abuse; Sex and Gender) has many textbooks to his credit and writes in a crisp, readable style. Like other volumes in the series, these titles both begin with "Background and History" and include sections such as "Problems, Issues and Solutions," "Perspectives," "Profiles," and "Data and Documents" as well as a time line and a glossary. "Perspectives" presents three- to five-page-long articles from contributors with a variety of viewpoints. Though much of the historical content remains the same as in the first editions, both works reflect new material (for instance, Same-Sex Marriage discusses the landmark Supreme Court case -Obergefell v. Hodges). VERDICT Compact "all in one" reference information without highly charged political commentary. © Copyright 2017. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. This book in the Contemporary World Issues series provides a comprehensive history of Cannabis sativa. The revised edition includes recent information regarding changes in U.S. state and federal laws regarding cannabis use, both recreational and medical. Background and History focuses on the science of the plant while also exploring its context in history across countries and cultures. Problems, Issues, and Solutions explores the primary dialogue of legality that has taken place across time. Perspectives evaluates much of the information through a pro/con lens. Profiles provides information on organizations and individuals that have been prominent in the age-old debates of the risks vs. benefits of Cannabis sativa. The additional sections of Data and Documents, Annotated Bibliography, and Chronology provide more context.--Pinkley, Janet Copyright 2017 Booklist
